The Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs has a number of resources to assist both property managers/owners and renters seeking support from the Texas Rent Relief program. Learn more about these resources, and the next free Texas Apartment Association rent program webinar June 16.
- Rental assistance funds are still available for past and future rent through the Texas Rent Relief Program (TRR), administered by the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs (TDHCA).
- Since its initial launch in February, the agency has simplified the application and certification process for both property owners and renters. See a detailed summary of the changes in place now.
- TDHCA has a number of tutorials and other resources available to assist both renters and property owners who are looking for help from the TRR. TAA has collected these resources on our website COVID-19 resource page and renter information page for ready reference.
- The Texas Apartment Association will host a free webinar June 16 at 10 a.m. to preview the re-application process (to reapply for additional aid when existing approved aid has been used), answer common questions about the program and share tips from property operators on navigating the program successfully. The Texas Rent Relief program has assisted close to 22,000 households, paying out more than $141 million in assistance through June 3, with another $106 million approved and pending disbursement. The majority of the funds paid are for back rent, though almost $59 million has been allocated to pay future rent. Funds can also be used to pay past and future utility costs for rental properties.
The program, administered by the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs, has almost $1.2 billion in total funds available through the first allocation of federal funds; an additional $1 billion is expected.

The agency prioritizes applications for those who are participating in the Texas Eviction Diversion Program and applications that are older than 31 days old.
Responding to feedback from applicants and partners, TDHCA streamlined the Texas Rent Relief (TRR) program application and policies in late April to make applying easier and get payments out faster.
The new changes, effective April 21, are reflected in the materials and online application available at https://texasrentrelief.com/.
