Synopsis

The night before was Valentine’s Day, but on February 15, more than 300 Texas Apartment Association members showed their love for the rental housing industry by converging on Austin for the association’s Day at the Capitol. About half were first-time attendees, with the total attendance and first-time attendance each setting records.

Comptroller Glenn Hegar (R-Austin) was the featured speaker at the morning briefing before members headed to the Capitol to meet with their representatives and senators. Hegar joked about being introduced as the state’s tax collector, then highlighted both the size and diversity of the state’s economy and the challenge facing legislators to pass a budget with significantly less available revenue than in 2015.

During the morning briefing, TAA’s legislative consultants Gardner Pate and James LeBas answered questions and offered perspectives on legislative priorities and the early signs coming out of the session. TAA government affairs staff reviewed the association’s key legislative initiatives, and highlighted the revamped TAA website as a source for updated legislative information.

Participants spent the afternoon at the Capitol talking with their legislators and legislative staff. A special NextGen reception was held for TAA members and legislators and legislative staff 39 and younger, and a Legislative Appreciation Reception was held for all TAA members attending the Day at the Capitol, along with legislators and legislative staff.

TAA members participating in the Day at the Capitol visited more than 100 legislative offices.
