Legislative Session News: March 15
TAA testifies on three key bills

Synopsis

The Texas Apartment Association testified in support of three key bills at the Capitol March 14.

Tuesday was a busy day at the Capitol for the Texas Apartment Association.  Here’s a few things you should know.

Property tax issues
TAA presented testimony to the Senate Finance Committee in support of CSSB 2 by Sen. Paul Bettencourt (R-Houston), a major property tax reform bill. The committee passed the bill.

SB 717 by Sen. Van Taylor (R-Plano), which makes reappraisal of property following a disaster easier, also was approved by the committee. TAA also supports this bill.

Short-term rentals
In the Senate Business and Commerce Committee, TAA testified in support of SB 451, which provides guidelines for regulation of short-term rental properties. The bill allows a private entity to regulate short-term rentals on its property. TAA is seeking to make the language explicitly clear.

LIHTC properties
In the House Urban Affairs Committee, TAA supported HB 616 by Rep. Jeff Leach (R-Plano), which removes state representative letters from the scoring criteria for low-income housing tax credit properties. Special thanks to TAA member Bobby Bowling with Tropicana Homes in El Paso, who testified for the association, as well as the Texas Affiliation of Affordable Housing Providers.
