Independent rental owners own or manage a small number of rental properties, and are actively involved, from an ownership perspective, in the management of properties. Typically, these properties are defined as having a small number of rental units at any single location. These smaller-sized properties generally require a unique property management style, as opposed to the management style used for properties of larger-sized companies.

Apartment association membership helps independent rental owners become better informed and educated about superior ways of managing rental properties. Membership also expands your connection to other independent owners to allow for greater communication, information flow and technical knowledge.

Main Characteristics of Independent Rental Owners (IRO)

• They typically have their own money invested in the property.
• They typically have other full-time jobs.
• They generally work alone, with no (or few) employees.
• Subcontractors and vendors are very important to them.
• They may have several types of properties, sometimes spread out geographically.
• The time they can spend on their rental properties is limited.
