RPM Program
Residential Property Management Degree Program:
University of North Texas
The Texas Apartment Association Education Foundation's flagship effort is its four-year undergraduate degree in Residential Property Management (RPM) at the University of North Texas in Denton.
This RPM degree is being offered through the University of North Texas (UNT) College of Business Administration, a leader in recognizing the multidisciplinary skill set required to successfully operate a multifamily rental property.
Working closely with the Texas Apartment Association and working professionals, the UNT College of Business Administration's Department of Finance, Insurance, Real Estate, and Law has developed a comprehensive curriculum for the RPM program.
Classroom instruction is supplemented with outreach programs to infuse the learning experience with examples of problems and solutions drawn from real-life situations.
The curriculum
Students in the four-year undergraduate RPM degree program receive a core curriculum including classes in:
- finance, accounting, business law, statistics, management, business computer information systems, and business policy
- residential property management
- principles of real estate
- specialized courses in finance, investments, valuation, and law/contracts for real estate, and
- electives including advanced level finance, business law, business administration, marketing, and risk management/insurance, or upper level economics, geography, computer science, or engineering construction technology.
Practical experience
All students are urged to participate in the college's Real Estate Club, hold student membership in TAA, and earn 3 hours of credit in an internship by working at least 15 hours per week in a real estate-related job.
Students also have many opportunities to contribute professional quality projects, such as:
- a five-year property management plan
- an apartment project investment analysis and marketing pro forma
- a lecture on fair housing
- qualifying for the Texas Real Estate Salespersons License prior to graduation, and
- taking advantage of apartment management and investment analysis software and videos.
The college also arranges field trips to multifamily properties and management companies and invites guest speakers to address students.
Internships
Numerous opportunities are made available to students to offer them meaningful, challenging, paid positions with property management firms. Internships may result in full-time employment after graduation.
Top donors to the TAA Education Foundation have priority access to students interested in internships.
